Maxie Tjampitjinpa
Maxie Tjampitjinpa “was in his early thirties when he took up painting in 1980 under the keen eye of Mick Wallankarri Tjakamarra, one of the founders and most senior artists of the movement… In 1984, Maxie won the Northern Territory Art Award… The group of paintings Maxie produced soon afterwards were some of the first in Western Desert art to be devoid of the design elements which up to that point had been its defining feature.” (Vivien Johnson, 2008) In 1988, Maxie was artist in residence at Wagga Wagga City Art Gallery and over his career his work was exhibited in four solo shows in Sydney and Melbourne and countless group shows. Maxie’s work is represented in many collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria and Auckland Art Gallery. He died in 1997.
