Artist - Book
3 - 24 May 2014
To coincide with Sydney Writer's Festival 2014, we ask: In an age of screens, of kindles and i-pads, what use is a book?
Cut, collected, scribbled, painted, printed, torn - the artists in this exhibition have used the book as medium, as subject or as both.
Whilst Kylie Stillman creates intricate, hand carved sculptures out of stacks of second-hand paperback books and recycled encyclopaedias, John R Walker's landscapes are scrawled en plein air over the unfolding pages of concertina artist books. Helen Eager's signature geometric abstraction cascades just as easily down the front steps of the Museum of Contemporary Art as the pages of a book. Her work across mediums has similar qualities to American artist Sol Lewitt, who has been an important pioneer of the artist's book internationally.
