Clay
29 January - 15 February 2014
Here, clay forms transcend their functional potential.
In such a way, Marea Gazzard's iconic clay sculptures retain the sense of a vessel whilst Peter Rushforth's functional vessels invite aesthetic contemplation.
What makes a form beautiful, powerful, good? For the ancient Greeks it was proportion, harmony and order. For the Japanese it is wabi-sabi - a balance between simplicity and complexity, restraint and spontaneity, perfection and imperfection, permanence and impermanence.
The artists in this exhibition transform clay - that ancient medium - into objects that are timeless.
